All-New 2020 Toyota Corolla Ready to Rock the Sedan World
CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2018) -- With more than 46 million Toyota Corollas sold globally since its introduction in 1966, it would be difficult to find a driver who did not recognize the name. Everyone, it seems, has a Corolla story. Many, though are going to be doing double takes when they see the re-imagined and reconfigured 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan. And that’s exactly the point.
The 12th-generation Toyota Corolla made its arrival in two chapters: the all-new Corolla hatchback arrived earlier this year, and now comes the current best-selling Corolla body style, the sedan. Both are based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which is far more than a new body structure, bringing together new approaches to engineering, design, assembly, and materials.
TNGA transforms both Corolla styles into drivers’ delights while also bolstering the model’s renowned value and reliability. Both draw from the same DNA and share powertrains. It’s no surprise, then, that the 2020 Corolla sedan dramatically elevates this model’s focus on comfort and refinement while also infusing it with the Corolla hatchback’s feisty personality.

Toyota Donates RAV4 Hybrid to Gulf War Veteran, FEMA Hero
NEW YORK, April 2, 2018—Edwin Sanchez has lived a life of service: first as a 19-year-old artilleryman during Operation Desert Storm, in which he engaged the Iraqi Republican Guard; then as a rookie firefighter called to action on September 11, 2001, filling in for fallen comrades during a 48-hour emergency shift; and later as first responder in disaster-struck places like Puerto Rico and the Hurricane Sandy-battered shores of New York.
But his proudest moment came in Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake that took about 100,000 lives. The death toll might have been higher were it not for Sanchez, stationed in Port-au-Prince as a first responder and search specialist with FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force from New York. As the sun set one evening, Sanchez approached a collapsed building, under which two siblings, 8 and 10, had been trapped for six days. Sanchez and his team spent five moonlit hours boring through steel and concrete, and scooping out dirt with their hands. When the children were finally hoisted to safety, the moment of jubilation was captured in an iconic photo that ran on the cover of the New York Post.
Team USA and Team Toyota athletes Oksana Masters, Amy Purdy and Evan Strong capture medals at Paralympic Winter Games
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – A group of Team USA and Team Toyota athletes garnered Paralympic Winter Games medals for their performances in banked slalom snowboarding and biathlon skiing on Friday, March 16.
In banked slalom, Amy Purdy and Evan Strong put in strong third-run performances to capture bronze and silver medals, respectively.
“It’s just amazing,” Purdy said. “There’s a much bigger picture here of thinking you can’t do something because you have a prosthetic leg or have injuries and pulling it together and making it happen, committing and going for it to see what the possibilities are. I look back to when I lost both my legs and just wanting to snowboard again. I certainly wouldn’t have known that I’d come here and win the medals that I have. I’m grateful that I’m able to share that with other people and that they can maybe look at what we do and say ‘hey, if they can do that then I can do that as well.’”
Purdy tallied her third-career Paralympic Winter Games medal after finishing third in the LL1 class of women’s banked slalom. It was her second medal at the Paralympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 after she won the silver medal in women’s snowboard cross earlier this week.

Torrance, Calif. (March 23, 2017) – Toyota Mirai trailblazing customers care about the air – their vehicle emits nothing but water vapor. Now, the fuel cell car’s newest campaign is blazing a trail with eco-billboard technology that will help Californians breathe even easier.
The Toyota Mirai eco-billboard campaign, in coordination with Clear Channel Outdoor Americas, will help clear the air from April 3rd through May 28th. Thirty-seven billboards in Los Angeles and San Francisco will create 24,960 square feet of pollution scrubbing surface and reverse the equivalent of 5,285 vehicles worth of nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions per month. NOx is a key ingredient in acid rain and smog.
This “catalytic converter” of billboards uses a titanium dioxide coated vinyl to purify the surrounding air. When oxygen reacts with the energized titanium dioxide catalyst, NOx is converted to nitrate and removed from the air. The light-activated, smog-reducing billboards continue to purify the air as long as light, humidity, airflow and the titanium dioxide coating are present.

Toyota Develops TNGA-based Powertrain Units for Smooth, Responsive, 'As Desired' Driving
Toyota City, Japan, December 6, 2016 -- Toyota Motor Corporation, in pursuit of superb driving and environmental performance, and based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) structural reform for making ever-better cars, has developed advanced engines and transmissions and further evolved its hybrid systems. Toyota intends to deploy these new powertrain units in a rapidly broadening range of vehicle models, starting in 2017.
Using TNGA, Toyota has been changing the automobile from its very structure, lowering hood heights, lowering the center of gravity and implementing other innovations to improve driving performance. To enhance fundamental vehicle performance in terms of running, turning and stopping, it initiated a comprehensive review centered on vehicle platforms and is now, since the release of the fourth-generation Prius in 2015, expanding the use of new platforms throughout its product lineup. At the same time, it has been developing new powertrain units, which form the core of an automobile, that significantly improve both driving and environmental performance.
Toyota's newly developed powertrain units are light and compact and have a low-center of gravity. In-depth reconsideration of fundamental vehicle performance has resulted in engines with high-speed combustion and in highly efficient multi-geared transmissions. Furthermore, to standardize the basic structure of these new units, modular design (unified design) was used, building a foundation for the future making of "well-built cars."
Toyota Develops World's First Behavior Observation Method for Lithium Ions in Electrolyte
Toyota City, Japan, November 24, 2016?Toyota Motor Corporation has developed the world's first1 method for observing the behavior of lithium ions (Li-ions) in an electrolyte when a Li-ion battery charges and discharges.
By using this method, it is possible to observe in real-time, the deviation of Li-ions?one of the causes of deterioration in the performance of Li-ion batteries. Toyota believes that this will provide essential guidelines for R&D that aims to improve the performance and durability of batteries, which would lead to longer battery life, as well as longer driving ranges for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) and electric vehicles (EVs).
Li-ion batteries use a metal oxide in the cathode, a carbon material in the anode, and an organic electrolyte for the electrolyte. Lithium ions flow in the electrolyte from the cathode to the anode when the battery is charging, and from the anode to the cathode when the battery is discharging, which results in an electric current flow. Thus, the Li-ions play an essential role within the electrolyte during battery charging and discharging.

25-Year Game Changer: Toyota, NCFL Pioneer Family Literacy Initiative
DETROIT (October 19, 2016) – Lupe Maldonado will tell you, “education is key.” That’s because it’s what helped her and her family create a brighter future. Their story started in a garage in Torrance, Calif., more than 20 years ago. That’s where they lived when they came to the U.S. No bathroom. No running water; a mattress on the bare floor. They covered up the holes to keep out the cold and the mice. While it may have been a bleak start, Lupe says just being in America was a dream come true.
While Ismael worked 12 hour days to support his family, Lupe joined a new program at her son’s elementary school called the Toyota Family Literacy Program in order to learn English. It was a tough decision, going to school instead of getting a job that could provide the money needed to move out of that garage; but Ismael and Lupe knew if she could learn English, she could advocate for their boys with teachers, doctors and in the community. Ismael also enrolled in English classes.

The nationwide rollout will be preceded by presales at designated dealers in Tokyo and Aichi Prefecture this winter, for which advanced orders will be taken online. Kiboro Mini is tentatively priced at 39,800 yen (excluding tax).
Kirobo Mini is a miniature communication partner developed to provide companionship. It fits in the palm of the hand and is only 10cm high when seated. It turns its head toward the person speaking and engages in casual conversation*1 while moving its head and hands. Its compact size means it can be taken just about anywhere, helping it to fulfill its role as a cuddly companion always on hand for heart-touching communication.
Kirobo Mini's range of gestures and conversation abilities are mainly made possible by connecting Kirobo Mini via Bluetooth®*2 to smartphones installed with a dedicated app. A built-in camera enables Kirobo Mini to recognize people's facial expressions, through which it tries to detect their emotions so that it can accordingly adjust its manner of speaking and moving. Kirobo Mini can also converse based on information drawn from the vehicle or home.

RAV4 'Top of the Class' for Car Seat Installation, According to Cars.com
September 14, 2016
PLANO, Texas, Sept. 14, 2016– Child safety. It’s a leading concern for parents every time they strap a little one into a protective safety seat and drive down the road. Effective protection by a child restraint in a crash, however, is dependent upon proper installation. Toyota designers and engineers have been working to make child safety seat mounts easy to access and use, and for the second time this month, it is being recognized for the efforts. Cars.com has named the 2016 Toyota RAV4 to its Car Seat Honor Roll. RAV4 is one of only six vehicles, out of 84 model-year 2016 and 2017 vehicles tested, to receive this distinction. According to Cars.com, the RAV4 earned a perfect score in each category of the test, which was performed by certified child passenger safety technicians using an infant seat, convertible seat and booster seat. Cars.com says that “when it comes to car seats, the RAV4 is at the top of the class,” praising a large backseat to accommodate rear-facing baby seats.
Toyota Engineers Easier Access for Child Safety Seat Mounts
Ann Arbor, Mich., Sept. 1, 2016 -- Toyota already has more vehicles rated as Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick + by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other automaker1, but now they have yet another rating to add to the list of accolades, an IIHS Good+ rating for Child Safety Seat Ease-of-Use.
In 2015, IIHS established the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) rating program to encourage automakers to design LATCH hardware that meets those ease-of-use criteria. While child restraints can be installed properly using vehicle safety belts, LATCH is intended to make correct installation easier.2 Toyota listened to IIHS and took quick action.

America's Best-Selling Car Still Most 'American-Made'
GEORGETOWN, Ky., June 28, 2016-- The best-selling car in America for 14 consecutive years is on another streak that recognizes its American symbolism: another award from Cars.com for most American-made. For the second year in a row and sixth time overall, the Toyota Camry claims the top position on Cars.com’s American-Made Index.
The Cars.com American-Made Index rates vehicles built and bought in the U.S. Factors include the percentage of parts considered domestic under federal regulations, whether the car is assembled in the U.S. and U.S. sales. Models with a domestic parts content rating below 75 percent are disqualified along with models built exclusively outside the U.S. or models soon to be discontinued without a U.S.-built successor. According to NHTSA, the U.S.-sold domestic content for Camry is 75 percent.
The Camry is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) in Georgetown, Ky., and more than 270 supplier locations in the United States provide content for the current generation. TMMK is Toyota’s largest vehicle manufacturing plant in the world with annual capacity to produce 550,000 vehicles and 600,000 engines.

From Cotton Field to Engine Capital of the World: Toyota Alabama Operates on All Cylinders
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., (June 21, 2016) -- Huntsville has long been known for engines…rocket engines that is. But today, it is well on its way to earning the title as "engine capital of the world" thanks to the more than 4.5 million engines produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
What was once a cotton field in northeast Huntsville is now a hallmark engine plant for Toyota. In fact, it is the only Toyota engine plant in the world that produces 4-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines under one roof, which covers more than 1 million square feet of production space. With a total investment of $864 million, the plant has grown to employ about 1,350 team members.
Toyota Alabama has expanded four times and produces six times as many engines since starting production. “Seeing the plant develop over the past 15 years has been amazing,” says Toyota Alabama President Jim Bolte. “Our team members’ outstanding commitment to quality and safety, plus the great support we have received from community partners and local officials has been the driving force behind our success.”
June 15, 2016 - In April, Toyota Connected was announced. The new company, according to the press release, is intended to “significantly expand…capabilities in the fields of data management and data services development.”
While it’s clear that Toyota Connected will collect data and find ways to improve the customer experience in myriad ways, that description itself brings up a few questions.
Toyota Connected CEO Zack Hicks explains how he wants to contextualize connected cars and give customers an escape from what he calls the “tyranny of technology.”
Toyota Tagged to Receive Keystone Leadership in Environment Award
WASHINGTON D.C. (JUNE 8, 2016) – Toyota North American manufacturing plants share space with all creatures great and small – from the furry to the feathered. And a main mission for the automaker is to keep those critters content.
From building woodland duck nesting boxes to planting pollinator gardens to managing feral hog populations, Toyota team members work diligently to ensure wildlife around the plants flourish. The co-habitat collaborations are as varied as a vehicle line-up, and now, species beyond birds, beavers and butterflies are beginning to notice.
Toyota Motor North America, jointly with Wildlife Habitat Council and GM, was honored with the Keystone Leadership in Environment Award today at the 23rd annual Keystone Policy Center awards dinner. Both automakers partnered with the Wildlife Habitat Council to expand wildlife habitat, support pollinator health and enhance biodiversity at manufacturing locations.
Plano, Texas and San Diego, Calif. (June 6, 2016) – It might not be the sunshine state, but Texas gets its fair share of sun. And when Toyota moves into its new North American headquarters next year, the automaker plans to “catch a ray.”
Enter Toyota’s Plano solar power system. The approximately 7.75-megawatt system will be the largest corporate office on-site solar installation among non-utility companies in the state of Texas. In total, the system is expected to provide approximately 25 percent of the power needed for the new headquarters campus. This installation is just one example of Toyota’s environmental efforts to achieve the goal of USGBC Platinum LEED Certification for the state-of-the-art campus.
Current plans call for the system to be completed in phases. Phase one will cover two parking structures – approximately 2.45 megawatts per garage – and comes online by August 2017. The final installation, located on a third parking structure, is slated for December 2017 and will produce about 2.83 megawatts.

What makes nuns go 'Whoopi?' Give ‘em a Toyota Sienna
NEW YORK, May 5, 2016 – Celebrating the 100th anniversary of an order of black nuns, Whoopi Goldberg and ABC’s “The View” teamed up with Toyota today to present a new 2016 Toyota Sienna minivan to the 14 sisters from Harlem. Now that’s a reason to say “Whoopi!”
After reading their story, Toyota decided to give the nuns, from the Order of the Franciscan Handmaids of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, a vehicle to continue their incredible work. Toyota also is providing a year’s worth of free gasoline and filling the van with toys and food.
Founded in Georgia in 1916, The Franciscan Handmaids run a day nursery, food pantry and other charitable initiatives, along with giving comfort to the sick and dying across New York City. They are one of only three predominantly black orders in the country.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (May 4, 2016)-- For anyone (i.e. everyone) who’s ever panicked when their mobile device chirped, “low battery,” the future could be far less stressful, thanks to the advanced battery research of scientists at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA). A new breakthrough involving magnesium batteries may soon open the doors for smaller, longer-lasting batteries for everything from cars to cell phones.
What’s the Big Deal with Magnesium? Magnesium metal has long been theorized as a much safer and more energy-dense alternative to current lithium battery technology. Lithium metal, in its natural state, is unstable and can ignite when exposed to air. In order to make lithium metal safe for batteries, ions are taken from the lithium metal and embedded into graphite rods, which are then used in batteries. That lack of actual metal, however, limits the amount of power a battery can store. Magnesium, on the other hand, is a very stable metal with the potential to store much more energy. But until now, research on magnesium-based batteries was limited because a magnesium-friendly electrolyte did not exist.
Close Collaboration Leads to Discovery Enter Toyota principal scientist and chemical engineer Rana Mohtadi. Mohtadi was researching hydrogen storage materials and their application to fuel cell technology; upon hearing her fellow researchers discussing the challenges of developing an electrolyte for a practical magnesium battery, Mohtadi realized her hydrogen storage material might just solve the longstanding problem. With further experimentation and the help of fellow researchers, her theory proved correct.
A ‘Whale’ of a Video: High School Students from Washington, D.C. Area Win Grand Prize in Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge
Silver Spring, Md. (April 29, 2016) – If you were steering a beluga whale down the street, would you risk sneaking a peek at your phone? Probably not. High school sophomores Matthew Post and John Caporaletti agree, and in their new public service announcement (PSA), they encourage their peers to drive their vehicles with the same care and attention. Today Toyota and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced that the Sherwood High School students of Montgomery County Public Schools in Olney, Md. (outside of Washington, D.C.) won the grand prize in theToyota Teen Drive 365 Video Challenge for their video “For the Whales.”
Now in its fifth year, the Toyota and Discovery Education challenge invites teens across the country to create public service videos to inspire their friends and peers to drive more safely. Matthew and John’s video provides an innovative perspective on the seriousness of driving with the stark reminder that just like a beluga whale, a standard sedan weighs a whopping two tons. With this in mind, the pair encourage drivers to eliminate risky behaviors and focus on the road. The teens will receive $15,000 and will work with a Discovery film crew to reshoot their video into a TV-ready PSA to air on a variety of Discovery networks.

Passion in Plano: Learning Program Changes Families, Education, and the Community
PLANO, TEXAS, Feb. 26, 2016 – It’s not every day you find parents and children excited to work together on homework. But, take a look at families participating in Toyota Family Learning in Plano, Texas, and you’ll find a refreshing enthusiasm for learning.
The national family learning program provides a solution to the educational challenges facing low-income and ethnically diverse families. This week, Toyota and the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) unveiled its newest sites at two Plano schools – Plano Family Literacy School and Sigler Elementary. More than 200 parents and children have been enrolled in the program in Plano since September. It is being funded by a three-year, $175,000 grant from Toyota and NCFL.
When Jim Bolte first began dating his wife, Tami, in college, there was a bit of a language barrier. See, Tami, was a sign language major.
“I would go out with Tami and her friends and they would sign to each other and point at me and laugh,” says Bolte, who has been president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL) since 2009. “And I wouldn’t have a clue what they were saying.”
To fix the problem, Bolte took a sign language class of his own to make sure they weren’t saying anything too bad. Nowadays, Bolte can use sign language to communicate with hearing impaired team members.
Bolte’s professional life now revolves around building V-8, V-6 and 4-cylinder engines for Toyota vehicles. In September, TMMAL built its 4 millionth engine, so things are going pretty well.
